PLAY PLAPLATE : CURVATURE PROFILE

This is not a chicken wing ! ^^

Always a setback when come to SB a curvature profile on Gunpla , thinking of how to ensure the parts accuracy when mirrored left-right or front-rear, especially a 3D curvature profile.

So as for myself , pre-shape plaplate template as foundation still the best way for this matter.

Some examples of curvature profile scratch building from 1/48 Sinanju head Display .

A set of cut out 1mm plaplate . The small center piece will be the template /foundation of a protrude curvy profile.

Adding a pre-shape rib as guide for epoxy putty shaping and sanding .

Initial shape done.

For 2D round profile, measure the desire size and with the elastic characteristic of Polystyrene, just bend with hand to soften the plaplate and try to Over do the U bend , yes Over do . It's much easy to push it out later than outer force to hold it in position.

Have another plaplate with desired dimension & shape draw on it , as a guide for accuracy. Glued.

Same technique applied to another 2 pieces of U-bend plaplate on top of the first one.
Again , Putty added if it have to be a 3D curvature profile.

Again a pre-cut thunder shape plaplate as foundation then sculpt on epoxy putty .
I will put extra 2~3mm thickness epoxy to the designed profile , so the following process i will only need to scrap off the extra but need no more topping.

Sculpting.

Trimming should be done while the epoxy putty are half harden ( after 1~2 hours curing, depend on how much water you add on when mixing the epoxy putty) As it's strong enough to hold the shape and stay in place , but also soft enough to slice with cutter.

Sanding with file only can be done after it's totally harden (after 4~5hrs)

As usual, sanding with 400 sanding sponge on curvy profile , flat & sharp edges will need sand paper/sanding stick.

Basically , DONE :D

WIP 1 :: 1/48 Sinanju Head Display

First build of 2012.

This will my second attempt to work on Sinanju since a MG Sazabi converted Sinanju by scratch build back in 2008. The 1/100 Sinanju was the first back to scale modelling built after my 10years absent , hence there was so much flaw and inaccuracy.

So it's like my second chance to make things right from previous mistake , but in 1/48 scale :P

It wouldn't be a full body scratch build but a bust with shoulder & down the waist line.

Yes it will be a Formania Sinanju Wannabe to put in line with Formania Sazabi and Nu Gundam , although i didnt own either one =..=

Many thanks to Rayloke 's awesome idea and also provide me the tool - a light sensor with motorized CCTV dummy set.

The idea is shaking head " No No Sinanju " !! :D

Ok , enough talking non sense and here's the progress of past 2 weeks.

Re-build the chest armor

Was plan to cut off the ori chest plate and move it forward , but seem not that appropriate in term of size.

Hand sketch design which is slightly different from the ori curvy & rounded profile , to one with some sharp edges & straight line profile to match chest armor 's.

Making of this Shoulder armor will be shared in PLAY PLAPLATE later.

Test fit and it seem smaller than expected -_-||| Will try highlight with bright color .

My very 1st miniature painting in life :)

Many thanks to Jinn taking up the initiative in making such a successful Christmas Group Build for us. Just like gift exchange , participants provide a model kit of his choice into pool and draw other's .
Simple rules as it is , build & finish the model kit that you draw ;)

Before this, i have ZERO knowledge about miniature or even WarHammer , just heard it before and knowing it's a game. So much to learn & so much to explore from this build, especially acrylic hand painting with Vallejo. It's just a whole new world :D

Rock by charcoal .
Base coat with acrylic white - wash with gray - random patches of dark brown - wash again with very diluted black - MIG pigment.

Wooden base by chopperboard ;P

WIP :: 1/48 MS-06F ZakuII

Again, another outdated WIP :P

Experimental hand painting process inspired by Max Watanabe technique found on the recently purchase Max's Ma.k in SF3D books. I am so curious about the 'rainbow base' (as i call it :P) how it might show the different compare to the plain color base. Only way to find out - DIY :D

Top Left : Dry fit 1/48 char's ZakuII

Top Right : Cast iron by tamiya putty with toothbrush

Base coated with silver to cover the red , which is much effective compare to gray surface primer .

A layer of Dark maroon coated on top of silver and have fun painting " rainbow base " with enamel.

Panzer Camouflage Ambush as references
Camo pattern with Tamiya enamel Olive drab , Sand yellow & dark brown.

Decals works after a top coat of gloss on the camouflage .

After decal , "lacquer base" gloss coat again at least 2 layer as protection for the next heavy enamel wash
Tamiya enamel Sand yellow + white

Tamiya sand yellow + brown + flat black for the lower half , there shd be dirtier as close to the ground

Let dry then wipe away with enamel thinner wet cotton bud.

THE GROUND WORK
Coconut trees
Experiment with the natural leafs of ficus benjamina , which i learn from military scale modelling forum on the net....
Leafs are clamped overnite between pages of heavy book before goes to the next step.

Trim across and let it end with sharp edge .

Bend the leaf and glue together at the petiole, took some real coconut tree photo as references for the leafs arrangement. Then heavily gloss coated and colored.

The trunk

Left : Double twisted steel rod wrapped by epoxy
Right : Loop a string around the epoxy to represent the tree trunk bark

Wrap with a thin layer of tissue paper with white glue as the trunk texture.

COCONUT
Coriander seeds aka the coconuts =D

But it shdnt be flat on top so just add a 0.5mm plaplate stripe and rounded the corner.

Recently the popular hair spray salt technique :P

MIG Pigmented and call it done :)

Under bridge concrete support

Left : Plaplate box as mold, small rock are arranged to be as close as possible

Right : pour in the very water diluted plaster of paris

Wait dried then slightly scrap & brush away some plaster on the front .

The Base
Dimension : 39 x39cm
Landscaped with polyfoam

Skip all the way (plaster of paris - white glue - fine sand - small rock ) to AB the base..... =D

Then again , rushing and forgot to shot the planting of grass & paddy

Play water time with clear resin mix with a very little of thinned mr.color brown

The "dust" effect
Before the resin hardened ,few drop of light brown on the desired area and mix around.

MKIII A8/R8's ground work references pics . Captured from abandon historical building on Magazine road , Penang .

The opposite row building which also with the structure & age but saved & renovated then listed on UNESCO Penang Heritage building. So, just make a corner of it before it flatten & turn into shopping mall ...

And here's the corner to be copied :)

The column. To create the similar texture & material , so i have to cast it out with plaster of paris.

Put on epoxy putty bricks . The base build with styrene .. Drain , small pcs of tarmac . Just copy the scene as much as possible ^^

Need more fall off bricks on the ground . Again , made with epoxy putty.

Put altogether and primed with black :)

WIP 1 :: 1/20 Ma.K SAFS MKIII A8/R8 ( Nitto SAFS conversion)

The MkIII A8/R8 - a up-armored SAFS with additional armoring on chest , hatch , front lower leg & engine cover. Lovely design and definitely 'looks' much brave & tough with all the beefed up :P

This conversion build based on the vintage kit SAFS MKI which 1st released 1984 & re-released 1999 by Nitto . Almost 20yrs ago , and definitely will still looks good for another 20yrs, i believe ^^

References very much from the Ma.K fans built of Modelkasten resin conversion kit's photo sharing in the net.

the beefed up in quite straight forward , work with 1mm plaplate as the edge of add-on armor , accurately and also as thickness guide line for putty works later.

Framed areas filled with epoxy putty and the plaplate frame did serve the purpose , shape up quite easily ^^

Never mind the hex nut for now, just a references for overall view.

Just to share a quick way to scribe corner rounded shape panel line on curvy profile which cant be done with metal etch template or Dymo tape. With 0.3mm plaplate , cut out the shape designed and stick on firmly with tape and .. scribe.

Further detail works as usual , self made hex nuts, tiny kotobukiya parts , greenstuff around joint as rubber cover, larger spring pipe to replace the tiny original with metal rod support , SB the weapon and recast the right arm for the left.
Replacement of shoulder armor plate with the larger version from Superball extra parts.

The Pilot - kitbashing of head from Falke pilot , trunk of Nitto Figure set 1 and goggle from Nitto SAFS ^^

Having too much fun with hand painting and skip the photo shooting ;)

So , called it done with the suit .

A limited edition Ma.K kits which only available in Japan ! But we are lucky ! Thanks to Lincoln Wright - scale120.com aka Lin.K and his wife doing us a big favor arranging the shipment to us .
My wild guess , there are not more than 5 in Malaysia for the time being ! :P

To return the favor , I would try best to portrait Linc as the pilot of the armored fighting suit with his iconic monkey smiley ! :D

Progress so far .
1st time dealing with Kneadatite Greenstuff , good stuff but still learning hard to handle it.

Also , 1st timer oil painting on figure , try & error :P

Split suit conversion.

Up next will be 1st time full hand painting tryout !! :D

WIP2 :: HGUC 1/144 KSHATRIYA

First time experiencing & detailing works on a 1/144scale kit, no SB but just adding plaplate , dig some holes here for some detailing effect :p

Exhaust grill detailing with 0.3mm plaplate

Cut hole for the exhaust grill.

To make the shoulder bracket bulkier , 1mm plaplate add-on 4side and then chamfered.

Rear skirt detailing

Groin armor cut & bend downward.

Side Skirt plaplate-ing

Front skirt with 4mm extended .

Thigh made wider 2.5mm

So the knee joint too, with 1mm plaplate at both side.

Knee Guard crop into half for the side extension.

Lower leg extended 5mm height

To dig a hole

For more exhaust grill details ;)

Lower leg armors detailed with G-temple accessories & extended 4mm height too.

The Lower leg rear armor.

Detail mod on the head - shorten the nose 1mm, raise the head top cap 1mm & some plaplate add-on.

So the over view

Left the feet untouched , and more panel line scribing to be done .... ;P

WIP1 :: HGUC 1/144 KSHATRIYA

This will be a very short lead time project that target to be finished in 20days, to meet ZeroG forum Group build due date :p

Progress so far, trim the 4 huge binder to enable a open funnel hatch.

The mechanism:

The binder cut out attached to the cut-out funnels portion of inner bracket.

A 1mm metal rod glued as hinge for the hatch to slide along.

Stressed .. when u have to repeat the same thing for another 3 ... =_=

WIP4::1/60 ASTRAY BLUEFRAME 2ND REVISE (PG REDFRAME SB CONVERSION)

Finally done with the last 2 scratch build parts, in it's basic shape & structures.

The 2cm high heeled feet , hope this extension is good enough to eliminate the feels of the short & bulky leg proportion.

The Dagger - built up by 2 pcs 2mm cut out..... real painful process.
Just a scale up version of MG BlueFrame dagger, nothing much change in design :P

Done with the basic structure of backpack support bracket .

PLAY PLAPLATE : FACETED GEOMETRICAL SHAPE

Another simple SB tutorial building a multiple faceted geometrical shape with plaplate.
Building facet by facet instead of trimming a solid block will greatly benefit us from avoiding tremendous sanding process , and providing nearly perfect symmetry as facets are pre-cut accordingly.

Example build from PG Blueframe - The Support bracket for the tactical arm when it transform into backpack.
The support bracket will be a match profile to the center part of the tactical arm , so i just build on top of it.
Pic below shown the 6th of precut plaplate .

Chamfer the side which will be attached to the main bracket.
How much angle of the chamfer it's all depend on your design. Usually, i just measure it visually.

Glued with cement.

Next will the triangle pcs, trace the shape onto a pcs of paper.

Align to test fit the paper cut-out before cutting the plaplate

Transfer the shape onto plaplate , cut out and chamfered to match the both side of the attaching area.

Glued & basic faceted geometrical shape done :)

WIP2::1/60 ASTRAY BLUEFRAME 2ND REVISE (PG REDFRAME SB CONVERSION)

Finally , get back and start working on this PG blue frame conversion since 2 weeks ago , after a 2mths off due to sidetracked to Ma.K and tired after daily jobs ( synonyms : lazy ) :P

Continue the SB of Tactical Arm -

The main frame structure.

This gun barrel will need to duplicate 4 times.

an overview when side blade mirrored.

The Tactical Arm sword guard & handle

Spending almost 1hrs figuring the size & drawing on the 2mm plaplate.

And get the shape out from the plaplate is torturing my fingers.

Done with the basic structure of the sword guard

and the Handle

And the most up to date progress - Booster engine

Fin layered by 2+1.2+1.2mm plaplate .

With recast consideration, the hinge joint designed with open catch .

The 2 troublesome curvy profile truster exhaust.

Another open catch joint, strengthen with pins.

Test fit to the sword guard.

The multiple angled hinge arm - this one really time consuming as i cant really find a rod with right dimension..

Finally cut the blade into half n config as on backpack mode.
Sadly , i cant have a joint to make this transformable without detach the 2 parts due to casting mold release issue.

so far, the Tactical arm over all view.

The "almost " finished Ma.K Gans's diorama.

Back to the diorama ground works....
i would like to try to achieve these :-
1. water effect
2. heavy rust
3. tar road

The 1/20 scale highway guardrail , i did go to roadside the the real thing measurement ..:P

Actually Malaysia guardrail post are with C beam and another C beam support . I found it's more interesting with I beam & wooden support :)

Landscape base with foam.

cover up the whole landscape with paster of paris

Next will the tar road , I would like to achieve the crack as pix below, so it need to be something really can be cracked , real crack. :P

Red highlight triangle area will be the tar ,and the 1:1 epoxy .

well mixed , cover up the area & roll flat with roller (4" PVC pipe) .. just like making bread ...

Before the epoxy dry up , pour on aquarium use sand and flatten it with roller again, quite the same concept of making real tar road ...

Trim to match the frame , with mini grinder disc.

here come the excitement .... planting paddy like farmer again ... :P

Add white line on the road & brush the earth with mixture of Tamiya dark earth & light sand

Some driftwood and the transparent supporting rod for the hanging leg.

Tried to have water splashing effect with shaped PET sheet (cutting of from PET packaging) to cover up the supporting rod.

brownish tinted clear resin poured.

the result .......Fail !! will try to work out way to improve this ...=.=

Anyway, while waiting the resin to dry , i weather the guardrail with MIG pigment

Recently poisoned by Ma.K virus from forum members, and so get myself a very 1st Ma.K kit and found out it was a really rare & discontinued kit :P
*The progress was 10days outdated and it's almost done by now .

No plan for any SB parts , just add on some tiny detail, mostly from Tamiya 1/35 US M1A2 Tank Abrams left over...
...Even the box art also poisonous....retro.. simple.... nice....

OK it's just a snapfitted kit , but it looks so fresh so cool to me ... :D

Snapfit, quick sanding & remove seamline really a pain here.. compare to a recent MG gundam kit.

the most outrageous topnotch mod in this kit !!!!!

replace the spring look alike plastic to a real metal spring ..

Also sand off the mold-on nut bolt which is out of shape caused by tooling release direction & replace with kotobukiya's.

Stretch mark on the "napkin" armor plate due to some slight bending for better profile.

Trying to have few areas with forged metal texture by putty+thinner with handbrush & toothbrush "poking" ..

Try to learn weathering technique like salt wash for paint clipping on this project.
Base color 1 - red + black

base color 2 - dark brown

Hair spray+ salt on the drumstick to make it even tasty...

Airbrush the primary color and wash away the salt under running water & brush.

All parts apply the same salt technique

Decide to have a simple camouflage pattern on the head .

With Mr.hobby masking sol and salt again

AB Grey

Launcher pack orange strip with masking & salt technique

Primary color done , decal on & ready for enamel wash & weathering

Washed , weathered & flatten with matte coat

Launcher with dark grey as base

salt technique again ( sorry i dint get bored with the salt yet .. =D ) and top with white.

Decal, washed & flatten

i always think that weathering kit reserve a diorama to make thing seem right..
so i m planing to have a action dio for this chicken.
With Sellys All Fix , to create the firing effect.

FIRE !!!

Further touch up & weathering effect applied.
Accumulated dust, dried mud effect with soft pastel (economical pigment powder .. haha)
Just scrub off with knife

Mixed with zippo lighter fluid .

Brush around corner .

Wipe off excess with lighter fluid dipped cotton buds..

Next WIP will be the groundworks...

WIP::1/60 ASTRAY BLUEFRAME 2ND REVISE (PG REDFRAME SB CONVERSION)

Started this project few weeks back and shared in few of my regular gunpla forums.

This will be my very 1st gunpla commission build which was asked for a conversion of PG Astray Red Frame to Astray Blue frame 2nd Revise - Gai Murakumo's custome MS, yup as the MG blue frame.

Target completion date : early March 2011 ( duration of 90days )

Parts that to be SB, refer & copy from MG. I guess there will not additional design effort put on , might just adding panel line & detailing.

Capture the MG tactical arm and trace the outline , enlarge the drawing with 160% to be 1/60 scale.

Cut paper out n trace outline on to plaplate.

PLAY PLAPLATE : CHAMFER

Just would like to share a simple way making a constant chamfer on the side of plaplate .
the chamfer i need here is 45degree on 1mm plaplate , so by math it's D1= 1mm , D2=1mm

D1 marking
Option A : Using the sharp edge of caliper, lock the measurement n just scribe along side .

Option B : Ruler marked up n down scribe a line or just with pencil.

i always prefer scribe with caliper , job done in secs with constant width . But only if u had invest a caliper (RM40 China bansai bansai ban ban sai !! :P)

D2 marking
Just paint the side with white board marker

Trim
Slice off the sharp corner. Dont need to be acculate , as long as the cut out not touch D1 & D2 marking.
1- Ease the next scribing process , which always happens where over scribe or accidentally slip off .
2- Less plaplate to scribe or to sand off , save ur time safe ur lung.

Scribing
Just hold the cutter perpendicular to the plaplate on the chamfer n scribe with light pressure.

Smoothing
after the scribing , it might give u a "step" rough surface where you press too hard during scribing.

So Sanding is the only way - file then sand paper

There was Malaysia BAKWC helded at Kuala Lumpur, Sg Wang Plaza on 23th~28th Nov 2010 My entry , a scratch built of add on full armors to Bandai Perfect Grade RX178-MKII.
Total of approximate 90days, 4-6 hrs daily to complete the built.

a Bronze medal , a winner's badge & a 1/144 Bronze plated Freedom Gundam :)

Just a photography practice....
nothing much on the kit itself...just did 8panel line on the forearm, sharpen the Vfin, then masking AB the color separation areas ,steel on all the joint , paint the gold & silver .. then just flat coated ...
Yes, the white & blue & red & yellow are the ori plastic color with flat coated :P

Back dated update :P

1st time using the Mr.Masking ... quite handy...

after peel off all the masking, not perfect and quite some minor touch up.

finished planting the grass ... ................OK........... it's not relax at all !!!! took me about 6hrs for this...

another 1/35 EFSF army repost , from E.F.S.F. Anti MS Squad Set.

Making a tree
fold n stacking the fake leaf material/paper .

apply glue on one side.

clamp the glue side to ensure firm attachment.

dried then cut into shape

plant it on the dead bonzai (from friend)

Test n try to allocate the tree , it seem too crowded and the leafs size too big too

so just scrap the idea with the tree..... 4hrs wasted...(maybe can save it for next project.. )

case with plaplate for the clear resin.... not sure the clear resin supposedly yellowish or maybe as a result of expired ..?? (it is expired with 50% discount )

All done and just the final touch up on grass & wooden sticker around the base.

Got sick of cutting/sanding/gluing plate for the FA MK2 , so it's time to have a small fun relax build (suggested by HowXMod -howardkhor), a diorama with this UC Hard Graph hoverbike :)

As it shd be a relax build so without much thought , just do what ever come across my mind while looking at it.
1st ,Saw off the fake net area then place from behind with Finemolds hexagon metal mesh.

made obvious those tiny recess , might plant some detail parts on it later.

Scribe & deepen the panel line

Finally the magnified glass built-in table lamp serve a purpose :P

so, that's the entree, main course coming soon :)

BAKUC 2009 : RX78-GP04G WIP

Stardust memory ,
my all time favorite gundam anime & mecha design.
RX78-GP04G never appear in the anime. The back story , it was designed by AE but Federation realized it's too expensive to produce. Later, Delaz Fleet (created by Zeonic Company)approach AE, bought the design & revised to AGX-004 Gerbera Tetra, later destroyed by Dendrobium Orchis.

It's my dream to scratch build a GP04G back 1999, and i did a 1/60 half way, due to further study.

After 10yrs, now it's done.

After a 10yrs break on gunpla , i have decided back to it cause i broke my femur bone last November from bike accident and rest at home.
Later I heard of "BAKUC" for the 1st time from a lady gunpla collector.
So, it just a perfect timing , my leg broke for a reason--- BAKUC. :P

why scratch build a SINANJU , or more appropriateas MG Sazabi conversion.
1. Always fancy on scratch build.
2. Cousin pass me a MG unicorn to spend time. later, i found it's awesome opponent.
3. MG version release soon in next fews month.

My diorama entry for 1997 Gundam Showdown Malaysia.
The Last Scene of the 1988 Gundam movie "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack" , Amuro used the Nu-Gundam in his final battle against Char, where he defeats his enemy’s MSN-04 Sazabi and capture the cockpit with Char in there. Amuro then try uses his Gundam to stop the asteroid base Axis from falling onto Earth. The Psycho Frame incorporated into the mobile suit causes a powerful phenomenon, as a result of the wish of all humanity, driving Axis away from Earth. Unfortunately, both Amuro and Char vanish with the Gundam.
